The Linden Market, Johannesburg

the linden market johannesburg

The Linden Market is a veritable feast for the senses.  Real soul food.  If you haven’t been, go!  And if you have been, go again!  They’re open tomorrow for their Autumn Edition.
I don’t often get a gap to just fo walk around a market for a few hours:  due to work (most weekends) and my beloved mountain bike ;-).  But, in December on what was a cloudy Saturday (I think it had rained the day before), the Linden Xmas market was on, and I was able to go exploring.   And boy was I happy I did!!   In my opinion, there are 5 main reasons why this market works so darn well, and why it’s so worthy of taking the time out to go enjoy.
1. the setting : I mean, really guys… set in nature at Emmarentia – what more do you want!?  they have cordoned off a section for the market to keep it “secure” and “business-like” and it just works.  Set amidst the pretty gardens, trees and shrubs.
2. it’s a true “pop-up shop” experience with Zapper and the like and with quality suppliers and a wide variety of goods on sale.
3. the vendors/ suppliers :  let’s just say – handmade/ crafted and local are key words.  And there so many options/ choices, without the overkill or duplicity of products – from clothes, to jewellery to art, decor, food, deli and more.
4. the food section :  this has been made into a “food court” as it were – again so many options from simple to, well, a little more exotic, from vegan to not vegan 😉 champagne, yummy dessert type goodies, gourmet ice lollies and on and on…
5. the vibe and music : this market has such a great vibe (almost like a village setting/ feeling), with areas for people to just sit and chill a bit, or eat/snack, and/ or enjoy the musician(s) on stage at that moment.  And on that note, they always have a great variety of artists sharing their awesome tunes.

I totally loved the time I spent there, walking from stall to stall, chatting to people and suppliers, and enjoying the wonderful tunes playing at that time, by the super talented Awesome Foursome String Band (some of the guys from Runaway Cult Train).  And, yeah I spent too much moola, c’est la vie, right? and only left when I did, because I had a commitment that afternoon.  Guys, this market runs seasonally, so there are only a few opportunities (at the moment) to go enjoy it, so take some time out and head on over – you won’t regret it.

Re-Trend captivated me for a while.  Mostly because it’s all about retro decor (mid century style/design), and the fact that they set up this amazing “store space” in a park, and managed to give it an authentic “store”  look and feel, that just worked.  Of course all the quirky things were awesome too…. the Frieda cushion, the textures, patterns and colours – I totally loved it!

and then I was “pulled” towards the Bobby – Yarn stall by the vibey Antoinette (the face behind the brand/ product) and the pretty pretty bags.  Loads of colors and patterns, and truly great story of a start-up business – way to go lady!

I can’t recall the name of this stall, but it sells clothing and accessories and the stall owner (above and below) was one of the most colorful characters I came across that day.  He jokes, and chats to people in a way that you can help but notice him/ the stall #feelgood
